This is limbic hijack in action. And it is related to love and his insecurities. In other words, here Joel is an immature expression of his animal and creator nature. The two are not in sync enough to perceive a choice not to cause harm and to explore healthier self-regulation and co-regulation. He is processing pain by punching without any thought. Emotion, impulse, and action are all collapsed.

If the same irritant had been present without the complexity of his wife, their breakup, his desire to be a stand-up comedian, and his failure, and her awesomeness in it, he would not have reacted so violently.

It is this same animal nature in harmony with creator nature that can create sexual ecstasy in a sapien.
